Exploring the Farm World: A Day at Lousy Run Farm School
Step into the enchanting world of Lousy Run Farm School, where children's imaginations run wild and curiosity is nourished. In this blog post, we'll take you on a journey through our recent farm school adventure, where we embarked on an exploration of goats – from their habitats and body parts to their diet and adorable kids. Keep reading as we share some of the activities we enjoyed and get a sneak peek into the future events we have planned with our other farm animals.
Our day at Lousy Run Farm School began with storytime, where we got to read about a goat named Gregory, who is a terrible eater! Through this book we introduced the idea of what goats eat, but we also got the kids to start thinking about what they eat too.
Next, our eager group set out on a scavenger hunt guided by one of our teachers. As we ventured through the farm, we may have come upon a few things that Gregory the terrible eater experienced in his story! Most importantly, the kids were introduced to some of the functional parts of our farm and what their purpose is in keeping our animals happy and healthy.
To truly understand the goats, we had to learn about some of their physical characteristics, where they live, and what they eat. With the help of our teachers, our participants were introduced to where the goats live and eat through hands-on activities. Our group discovered that goats are natural foragers and are particularly fond of browsing on fresh foliage in the farm's pastures and woods. They also got to see and touch some of the food that we make for them here on the farm.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly meeting the goats face-to-face. We interacted with our awesome goats, learning about their anatomy and how they function. The students loved petting their soft fur, feeling their velvety ears, and even getting to observe their expressive eyes up close. The goats got a few treats out of the deal too, which they were more than happy about!
No farm school experience is complete without a snack and craft! Our snack comprised of fresh, locally grown products that challenged our students to try something new. After snack we dove into a crafting session where we made charming goat puppets with alternative options for differing ages. It was a hands-on opportunity to reinforce what we learned about goats while fostering creativity and imagination.
Our day at Lousy Run Farm School left us wanting to provide more experiences and education about our farm! The good news is that we are planning an exciting lineup of future events, featuring a range of different topics. From learning about chickens and their eggs to exploring the purpose of different farm equipment, we can't wait to share these adventures with you.
